Chinese Donuts
2 Ways

Back in the day, Chinese food was always a special treat. What made it more exciting was the dessert we would have after our meal, Chinese Donuts. They were so warm, fresh, and delicious. As kids, we just couldn't get enough. Then somehow, we found out that these delicious sugary balls were nothing but fried biscuit dough! Once we learned how to make it at home, it was over. The moment we made them, they disappeared the moment they were done. Then again, 11 kids in a house made things disappear quite frequently...

I remember when I first introduced my son to these. It was love at first sight and first bite. He literally couldn't stop eating them and I had to remove the bowl away from his reach before he ruined his appetite for dinner. It brought back my childhood memories...

As far as the 2 ways part, this recipe shows you the traditional method by coating them with sugar, and an additional treat by coating them with cinnamon sugar. Both way are delicious so I urge you to try both! A fun and easy recipe to try with your kids at home.

Ingredients:

Prepackaged Buttermilk Biscuit Dough
Sugar
Ground Cinnamon
Oil

Directions:

1. Place some sugar OR sugar and cinnamon in a large enough bowl for tossing. Set aside.

2. Put oil in a medium size pot, enough for deep frying the dough. Place the pot on medium heat and allow it to come up to temperature while you prepare the dough.

3. Open up a package of your preferred buttermilk biscuits. Separate the pieces. Cut each piece in half. (If you prefer larger sized donuts, then leave whole.)

4. Roll each cut piece into tight balls. (If you decided for larger sized donuts, there is no need to roll into balls.)

5. Gently place each ball into the heated oil. Allow to fry until it reaches a golden brown (roughly 2-3 minutes). It will cook quickly so keep an eye on it all all times. Flip the doughnuts half way through to ensure even browning. (Avoid very hot oil as it will brown to quickly or burn and the inside may not fully cook through).

6. Once golden brown, remove from the oil and place into the sugar (or cinnamon sugar) bowl immediately. Give it a quick toss to evenly distribute and coat.

7. Serve immediately while nice and warm. Enjoy!
